Provocative stress research from UCLA rejects the old
"fight or flight" response when it comes to women. Instead, their study suggests
that the female reaction to stress is more accurately labeled, "tend and
befriend." Laura Cousin Klein, Ph.D, one of the study's authors, says the
hormone oxytocin released in women during stress, encourages tending to children
and gathering with other women. Engaging in these activities then produces a
calming effect. Study after study has found that social associations reduce our risk of disease by lowering blood pressure, heart rate, and cholesterol. Women, give in to your natural response when faced with stress and let your friends melt away the tension. Men can draw on this wisdom as well. May you be filled with goodness, peace, and joy.
