Wellness Pathway #230
Eat Sulforaphane

OK, I admit to using this title just to get you reading this in order to learn what I'm talking about. Especially, since a good rule of thumb, when it comes to healthy nutrition, is to read labels and to avoid foods with ingredients you don't recognize or can't pronounce. So what am I doing, telling you to eat sulforaphane?

Fortunately, sulforaphane is one ingredient you won't see on food labels. It's not an additive, but a naturally occurring substance in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, broccoli sprouts, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, and kale.

And what an amazing substance it is. Recent studies show that sulforaphane helps to fight cancer, fend off ulcers, and possibly reduce heart risk. It does all this by inactivating carcinogenic substances, activating a powerful antioxidant response, and killing H. pylori bacteria.

Although the first President Bush may have exercised executive privilege to refuse to eat broccoli, it turns out that's really not such a good idea. Fortunately for broccoli haters, the sprouts have 50 times more sulforaphane than the whole vegetable and the protective effect of one serving lasts for several days.

So, if you want to do a body good, eat sulforaphane for life!

Coaching Inquiries: How often do you eat cruciferous vegetables? Would it be good to increase your weekly consumption? How could you make this an enjoyable part of your diet?
