Wellness Pathway #223
Eat Cinnamon
|
Most of us have a powerful supplement in our kitchen pantries, with no known
side effects and a host of health benefits. To consume this supplement we don't
have to swallow any pills or follow any exotic diets. We just have to eat at
least one half teaspoon of cinnamon a day.
In a recent study, cinnamon has demonstrated benefits both for cardiovascular
disease and diabetes. It can lower cholesterol and triglycerides from 13 to 30
percent (that's comparable to the benefits seen with statin drugs), it can
reduce insulin resistance, which causes type 2 diabetes, and it can cut blood
sugar levels by 20 to 30 percent. "Some people who were taking medication for
diabetes," notes Richard Anderson, Ph.D., the study author, "have been able to
get off their medications and use cinnamon alone."
Cinnamon's other health benefits include improved digestive function, reduced
congestion, relieved muscle stiffness and joint pain, thinner blood, reduced
inflammation, and preventing gastro-intestinal and urinary tract infections.
Now that's a powerful spice! With no known risks and negligible calories, I
consume up to 1 Tablespoon per day, by adding it to fruit smoothies, cereals,
and yogurt. One can also chew on a cinnamon stick (not the candy, but the actual
spice) to receive the health benefits. If you don't enjoy eating cinnamon on a
regular basis, it can be taken in capsule form.
Coaching Inquiries: Do you consume enough cinnamon on a daily basis to receive
its health benefits? How could you increase your consumption of cinnamon and
make it a regular part of your diet?
