Wellness Pathway #211
The Calorie Restriction Debate

In Wellness Pathway #114, Click, I wrote about the connection between calorie restriction and longevity. In study after study, animals put on a severely calorie-restricted diet lived proportionately longer. A 40% restriction in calories produced a 40% increase in life expectancy. This has been demonstrated with rats, fleas, dogs, guppies, spiders, and snails. But what about with human beings?

At this time, the jury is still out. True believers, following The Anti-Aging Plan developed by Dr. Roy Walford, professor emeritus of pathology at UCLA, limit themselves to about 1,400 calories a day of carefully selected foods plus nutritional supplements. Walford estimates that his plan would enable people to easily live to the age of 160, with an average life span of about 120. He also estimates that about 900 people (including himself) are now following his plan worldwide.

Other studies suggest otherwise. Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx tracked 10,000 subjects over a 17-year time period. Of the 1,500 who died during that period, the majority had the lowest calorie intakes (some as little as 1,100 calories per day). The people who both consumed the most and exercised the most had the lowest mortality rate in the study.

Of course, this doesn't recommend a careless attitude when it comes to nutrition. If we're gaining weight, then we're eating too much. But healthy eating, combined with vigorous exercise (including endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance training), is still the prescription de jour. "It's important to fuel your exercise," notes Dr. Jing Fang from the Einstein College, "with a low-cholesterol, low-fat, high-fiber diet." And you've read that before, right here in LifeTrek Provisions.

Coaching Inquiries: Do you eat enough to fuel your body for a vigorous exercise program? Do you have enough energy to get through the day? Does your day include regular exercise? What changes could you make to get with the program?
