Creativity Pathway #123:
Intuition and Sensing

I was sitting on my living room couch,
pining for the days I could look out into the beautiful field behind our house
and see rabbits, or flowers, or children playing. It broke my heart to think
about the field being replaced by cookie-cutter condominiums.
There is certainly nothing wrong with longing for days gone by, or appreciating
what has been, but I wasn't reminiscing, I was worrying. I was worrying about
what might happen to my beloved field. So full of anxiety that I had paid no
attention to what was actually happening in it. There were indeed, on that very
day, flowers, children and yes, even an animal in the field.
On the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, a personality assessment based on the
theories of Carl Jung, I have a strong preference for Intuition versus Sensing.
Those who prefer Intuition are drawn to information that is more abstract,
conceptual, big-picture, and tend to imagine possibilities for the future. This
clearly describes me and my tendency to project and think about the "what ifs."
In contrast, those who prefer Sensing favor clear, tangible data and information
that fits in well with their direct here-and-now experience.
Both personality preferences have their value and effectiveness. Neither is
right or wrong, better or worse. We can live life more fully however, when we
are aware of the way we tend to look at the world, what shapes our reactions to
the world and can then learn to approach situations from all perspectives. Being
aware of the need for balance in my own life, I appreciate my ability to be
forward-thinking, while I also understand the importance of being present to the
details of the moment.
Coaching Inquiries: How often do you consider varying perspectives when
gathering information? Do you feel caught in the same bad habits, patterns and
ruts? How could learning about the personality preferences of those around you
benefit your relationships?
